A subordination agreement is a document used in a debt repayment process. This document changes the priority rank of an existing debt. Previous loans are viewed as higher priority than newer loans that a borrower may take out, therefore, to change the priority of a loan, this document is needed. These documents are commonly used with mortgages on a home, if a home has more than one mortgage.

Two or more parties attached to the mortgage enter into the agreement and agree to hold the subject loan to a higher priority. Once signed, the lenders will consider the subject of the agreement the more senior loan, despite it being taken out more recently.

The agreement may contain a property description and the address, plus information on both lenders. The subordination agreement may also include the amount of the original mortgage, the modified amount and dates for the actions of each mortgage.
